A shared word list makes the rules visible.
The open dictionary game accepts 990 words, including familiar words and some less common ones. Each move must still change exactly one letter. This is a word list for this game; it does not provide definitions or cover every English word.
A small number of entries are omitted for game suitability. The exact accepted list is downloadable, so you can check a word before planning your next move.

Word checking uses the list included with the game. It does not require an external dictionary service, a dictionary subscription, or an API key.
Made possible by an open word-list project.
Our list is derived from the English Speller Database, formerly SCOWL, using its rel-2026.02.25 release. Thank you to Kevin Atkinson and the project’s contributors and source-list authors.

How we select words.
Source version and selection details
We use SCOWL size 80, with American, British, British -ize, and Canadian spellings at variant level 1. Size 80 includes less common words useful in word games. Our puzzle starting and ending words are selected separately.
We keep entries written as exactly three lowercase letters from a to z. We filter the source’s marked abbreviations, word parts, names, trademarks, and special categories, then apply a small editorial exclusion list. Source labels are incomplete, so these filters do not guarantee a perfect classification of every word. Inclusion is a game rule, not a statement about every use or meaning of a word.
This game’s list version is scowl-three-2026.02.25-1. The downloadable list is the final reference for accepted words. Report a questionable entry through our contact page.
