DAILY BALANCE / RULES & METHOD

How to find the balance.

A 3 × 3 number puzzle: use 1–9 exactly once, keep the fixed clues, and meet every row and column target.

01 / PLAY

Start with what you know.

Tap an editable cell, then a number. Fixed clues are labeled “Fixed.” The large number at the end of a line is its target; the smaller number is the current sum. A matching sum turns green and gains a check mark. All six lines must match, and all nine numbers must be present exactly once, to finish.

For example, if a row has a target of 16 and contains 4, 9, and one empty cell, then 16 − 4 − 9 = 3. If 3 is already elsewhere, revisit an earlier placement. A line that matches is not proof that each entry is correct.

When no line has one gap, consider pairs. A target of 18 with a fixed 4 needs a pair totaling 14. From 1–9, that could be 5 + 9 or 6 + 8; the intersecting columns help choose.

02 / CONTROLS

Move at your own pace.

Use Tab to reach a cell, arrow keys to move through the board, 1–9 to enter a number, Delete or Backspace to clear, and Escape to deselect. Undo reverses up to 100 recent entries. Reset asks for confirmation. There is no timer, lost life, or required sharing.

“Explain a hint” looks for a single-empty-line deduction based on your current entries. It may suggest comparing pairs when there is no such deduction. “Reveal selected cell” explicitly supplies an answer; it is not a logical deduction. Both count as assistance. Undo and reset keep the assistance count.

03 / DATES & SAVES

One worldwide date.

A new daily board opens at 00:00 UTC. The game shows the next reset in your local time. Your open board stays put across midnight and offers a link to the new date. Completing it later is an archive solve.

Progress and completed boards are saved on this browser when local storage works. Completing a daily board on its own UTC date adds at most one streak day. Practice and past-board replays do not fill streak gaps. Clear local puzzle data from any game page to remove these records. They do not sync to other devices or browsers and are not cheat-proof scores.

04 / METHOD

One solution, independently checked.

Boards are generated ahead of time with a deterministic seed. Each board has two fixed clues in different rows and columns. A cell-search solver counts solutions up to two; a separate row-triple enumerator independently checks each board. Only boards with exactly one solution enter the bank.

Each immutable ID binds the board content and generation version. A dated manifest assigns boards to UTC dates. Extension appends new boards without changing earlier assignments. The site shows only released dates. If the bank ends, it says so and offers practice and archive boards.

We reject layouts equivalent under row or column rearrangement, transpose, or number complement (1 ↔ 9, 2 ↔ 8, and so on). That filters obvious repetition, but it does not measure human difficulty, guarantee subjective variety, or prove the puzzle enjoyable. The two-clue choice is an initial tuning decision to evaluate with players.
